DESCRIPTION:A talk about the Swing Riots by Dr David Peacock\, who has promised us a connection to The Hinds Head in Aldermaston \n\n\n\nThis meeting is free for AHG members and a meeting fee of £5 for non-members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Swing Riots were a widespread uprising in 1830 by agricultural workers in southern and eastern England in protest of agricultural mechanisation and harsh working conditions.  \n\n\n\n\n\nPreviously Dr David Peacock gave the History group a talk on Padworth House and then subsequently lead a party of members in a tour of the house.

DESCRIPTION:At this meeting there will be updates about the History Group followed by a talk  \n\n\n\n“Not all Beer and Skittles” A Short History of Pubs\, Beer and Breweries\n\n\n\nby Sue Ellis\n\n\n\n\nSue Ellis is an amateur historian who moved to Thatcham in 1983\, and has since become immersed in the history of West Berkshire. She is Secretary to the West Berkshire Heritage Forum and to Thatcham Historical Society\, and sits on the Thatcham Town Council Heritage Working Group. She is very much involved in West Berkshire’s Local Listing process\, which identifies and celebrates buildings and other heritage assets of local importance\, and in the Conservation Area Appraisal training currently being rolled out to parishes. Now retired from a career working in libraries and in local government\, she indulges her love of history\, ancient buildings and archaeology by researching and talking on a wide range of subjects\, including Richard III (man or monster?)\, the NorthWest Passage\, Piltdown Man\, Anglo-Saxon history\, military history\, and family history. \nBiography from the Berkshire Local History Association website\n\n\n\nSue last spoke to the Aldermaston History Group in January 2020 with her talk on “Magna Carta” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProvisional date & venue for Aldermaston History Group Meeting\, details are subject to change. \n\n\n\nOpen to members and non-members (a £5 is charged)

SUMMARY:Heritage Open Days 2020
DESCRIPTION:The inside of the 900 year old church of St Mary the Virgin is decorated with wall paintings from 3 eras: medieval\, post reformation and Victorian. The windows are all Victorian stain glass and there is a 500 year old alabaster tomb. \n\n\n\nThe church is usually locked\, except for services\, so this is a chance to see this beautifully decorated church close up.Built in the 12th Century it is closely related to the history of the Aldermaston Court estate\, and to the Lords of the Manor of Aldermaston.In 1893\, Charles Edward Keyser bought the estate and became the Lord of the Manor. A decade before Keyser had compiled and published “A List of Buildings in Great Britain and Ireland Having Mural and Other Painted Decorations”\, so he was well placed when between 1896 and 1902 he commissioned the repair and redecoration of the church using his artist friend Philip Harry Newman. \n\n\n\nEvent Organisers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation
