DESCRIPTION:The History of the River Kennet\n\n\n\na talk by Dr David Peacock \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr David Peacock is an author\, historian and speaker on the history of Newbury and its environs. He was formerly a teacher of politics and history at Padworth College.Previously Dr David Peacock has given talks to the History Group on: \n\n\n\n\nPadworth House and then subsequently lead a party of members in a tour of the house.\n\n\n\nThe Swing Riots\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Peacock researches\, writes and lectures on the history of the Newbury area from prehistory to the present day.  He teaches classes in local history at West Berkshire Museum and gives talks on local history to many clubs and societies.He has previously taught for Oxford University’s Department of Continuing Education\, the University of Reading and Newbury College.  His Ph.D. for the University of Reading focussed on “Jack of Newbury” and the Tudor cloth industry.A former journalist and teacher\, he is the author of the 2011 edition of The Story of Newbury\, and the 2018 Newbury Roman Cemetery as well as numerous articles for local newspapers and periodicals.

She is Secretary to the West Berkshire Heritage Forum and to Thatcham Historical Society\, and sits on the Thatcham Town Council Heritage Working Group. She is very much involved in West Berkshire’s Local Listing process\, which identifies and celebrates buildings and other heritage assets of local importance\, and in the Conservation Area Appraisal training currently being rolled out to parishes. Now retired from a career working in libraries and in local government\, she indulges her love of history\, ancient buildings and archaeology by researching and talking on a wide range of subjects\, including Richard III (man or monster?)\, the NorthWest Passage\, Piltdown Man\, Anglo-Saxon history\, military history\, and family history. \nBiography from the Berkshire Local History Association website\n\n\n\nSue has previously spoken to the Aldermaston History Group in January 2020 with her talk on “Magna Carta” and in July 2023 with a talk on “Not All Beer and Skittles  – A Short History of Pubs\, Beer and Breweries“.

Prior to this he studied for a BA in Ancient History and Archaeology and MRes in Archaeology at the University of Reading\, currently completing a PhD thesis on the Roman site at Richborough at the University of Kent. \n\n\n\nPhil has also worked as a field archaeologist in the UK as well as working on excavations in Catalonia\, Portugal and Italy. \n\n\n\nHis main area of interest in Roman small finds\, particularly scales and weights\, and Late Roman belt sets.
